If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you know my boys have a pretty gnarly cough. Its one that makes me cringe when I hear it, and of course when it first came about, I ran to get my herbal cough syrup and realized we were out. So I dug up the recipe my herbal teacher, Connie Karstens, gave the class and made some right here in my home. Let me tell you how empowering it is to be able to make medicine right in your own home. Its incredibly easy and so convenient! My boys love it and it helps immensely, they don’t cough near as much and day by day its getting better! So let’s dive in!
In a sauce pan combine water and herbs, bring to a boil, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes. Strain with a cheese cloth and for every 1 cup of herbal liquid, pour a 1/2 cup of honey. Store in a fridge up to 4 weeks.
Use 1 tsp for adults, 1/2 tsp for children. Do not give to children under 2 (due to honey)
You can also use real maple syrup and vegetable glycerine as a replacement for honey. Although honey would work best. If you can’t buy or find all these herbs, the most important ones I would use are mullein, thyme, cinnamon sticks, and chamomile. I do though, recommend using all the herbs as they have a massive amount of medicinal value for the respiratory system!
I stored mine in a mason jar in the fridge, and then have a small tincture bottle I use for the daily use. You can find all of these herbs and more on mountainroseherbs.com they are a trusted brand I use often! Remember that herbs like marshmallow root, chamomile, hyssop, mullein, and type, are fantastic herbs to make into tinctures! For more information about tinctures you can check out my Ebook here.
