A Practical Back-to-School Wellness Routine for Families
Share
As you know, we homeschool and while I may not be sending my kids away to school, we still update our apothecary to fight against flu season, which frankly is right around the corner.
While we can't avoid every seasonal flu, we can create simple routines that help support the body, encourage restful sleep and nourish the body.
Here are some of the simple practices and herbal preparations we keep on hand for the back-to-school season.
Start With the Everyday Foundations
Herbal remedies can be wonderful additions to a family’s routine, but they work best alongside the basics. Before reaching for another supplement, begin with the daily habits that help the body function well:
-
Consistent bedtimes and plenty of sleep
-
Nourishing meals with adequate protein and healthy fats
-
Regular hydration
-
Time outdoors (get that vitamin D stored up for winter!) and gentle movement
-
Handwashing before meals and after arriving home
-
Quiet time to help children decompress after school. School can be stressful, children need to "relax" too.
Children often hold themselves together throughout the school day and release all of that built-up energy once they get home. This can be projected in crazy hyperactivity, or sometimes even irritability and anger.
Make Elderberry Syrup Part of Your Seasonal Routine
Elderberry syrup is one of our favorite preparations to keep in the refrigerator during the school year. Elderberries have a long history of traditional use during the colder months and are naturally rich in plant compounds and antioxidants.
Our Elderberry Syrup is made with elderberries, rose hips, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, lemon juice, raw honey, and water. It offers a simple and delicious way to incorporate traditional herbs and warming spices into your family’s seasonal wellness routine.
Many families use elderberry syrup consistently during the fall and winter or reach for it when seasonal flus begin circulating through the classroom.
Because our syrup is made with real ingredients and raw honey, it must be kept refrigerated. It should not be given to children under one year of age.
Create a Calming Bedtime Routine With Magnesium Balm
The transition back to school can be tiring for children and parents alike. Earlier wake-up times, extracurricular activities, homework, and busy evenings can make it difficult for everyone to settle down.
Our Magnesium Balm with MSM is an easy addition to a relaxing nighttime routine. It is made with Zechstein magnesium chloride, MSM, jojoba oil, shea butter, beeswax, and vitamin E.
Massage a small amount onto the feet, legs, shoulders, or stomach as part of the evening wind-down. This can be paired with pajamas, a bedtime story, dimmed lights, and a screen-free period before bed. The gentle massage itself helps signal that the busy part of the day is over.
Some people notice a temporary tingling sensation when first using topical magnesium. Begin with a small amount and avoid applying it to freshly shaved, irritated, or broken skin. Our balm can be left on or washed off after approximately 20 minutes if preferred.
Keep a Wellness Kit Ready Before You Need It
One of the hardest parts of caring for a family during the school year is realizing you are out of something at the exact moment you need it.
A prepared Wellness Kit takes away some of that last-minute scrambling. Instead of searching through cupboards or placing an urgent order, you already have an easy to make kit for elderberry syrup or cough syrup ready to make and use.
The extras.
OSCILLOCOCCINUM this is a go to for us, I've truthfully only ever used it on Jeremy and I, because let's be real, we don't have time to be sick. But when we remember to use this it kicks whatever we were feeling to the curb, and fast.
Bone broth. This is ALWAYS in my cupboard, freezer or pantry. I have no idea if it's in my head but I make soup and I INSTANTLY feel better. This year I actually plan to make some on stock and can it. I'll be posting that recipe soon.
Choose Consistency Over Perfection
You do not need an overflowing supplement cabinet or an elaborate daily schedule to care for your family well. A bottle of Elderberry Syrup in the refrigerator, Magnesium Balm beside the bed, and a stocked Wellness Kit in the cupboard can provide a simple starting point.
When life becomes especially busy, return to the foundations: nourishing food, water, rest, fresh air, and a calm home rhythm.
Back-to-school wellness is not about trying to control every germ or prevent every difficult day. It is about preparing thoughtfully, supporting the body, and creating small routines that help your family feel cared for throughout the season.
